Can't wait for next Saturday. If Rusty doesn't pull a deux-ex-machina out of his pocket, then I'm content and this three-parter might be his best to date. If not, and he'll be all over you-know-who and the Doctor, then I'll be bored.

Did anyone notice where Cutter kept his mobile?

I noticed repeatedly that Stephen seems to like to put it in one of the bags of his cargo trousers' - so did Cutter keep it in his jacket or in the back of his jeans?

If you have no idea what I mean, look at this pic.

The instruction label that was attached to it said that you can't fill carbonated drinks into the bottle because the plug would come out. I'm wondering if this only means lemonade or highly carbonated water. As I prefer medium/low carbonated water anyway, I'm wondering if it extends to that as well.

Advice?

25/05/2008 @ 20:32 - Kommunalwahlergebnis (City Election Result)
*Reading_nude-(green)*
For my town:

CDU (conservatives) 25.5% (15 seats) -24.5%
SPD (social-democrats) 28.8% (18 seats) -3.6%
FDP (liberals) 8.4% (5 seats) +3.2%
Grüne (Green Party) 11.5% (6 seats) +2.3%
Die Linke 11.7% (7 seats) +9.9%
BfL [= Bürger für Lübeck] 11.3% (6 seats) +11.3%
BUNT 2.7% (1 seat) +2.7%

participation: 41.4% (-8%)

Those are the parties that will have seats in the Bürgerschaft (the city parliament).

BfL is a conservative newbie in this town. Die Linke are a left-wing party. My own party, die Grünen won two direct mandates, something that never happened before.

What I hear from the news reports, this election was a Protestwahl, meaning, the big parties got slapped.

22/05/2008 @ 23:57 - The Reading - Henning Mankell (Der Chinese)
*Reading_nude-(green)*
If you ever have the chance to go to a reading with Henning Mankell, do so. It's a lot of fun and I didn't notice how quickly an hour passed by. Also, I got one of his books signed (name only, there wasn't time for more).

They had Axel Milberg there too, who is doing the Mankell audio books; he was reading the relevant passages.

If Mankell could have his way (so he said), Milberg should read all audios. He apologized in perfect English that he wouldn't do the reading himself, because while he understood German well, he couldn't speak it well enough.

They had a professional English scholar (Angilistin) there who was asking the questions to which Mankell answered - he preferred to do it standing so it was fun to watch him talk. And no, you couldn't ask him anything yourself. They did, however, orchestrate it well so you had a lot of time to actually listen and watch Mankell talk. He was very entertaining and easily understandable.

Some salient points that stuck in my mind:

  • what differences humans from animals is that humans are people who tell stories

  • he has his limits as to how much violence he can talk about in his books: there was a Wallander story about child abuse, which he threw away and destroyed, because he couldn't bear to read what he had written

  • he talked about the theatre he had in South Africa and how successful the Lysistrata was they produced there: they changed it into a play on a fish market and the women in the audience considered going on a sex strike like in the play to get the men to stop the violence, because at the time the play was given, there was a civil war down there

  • he had a great answer for a racist who wanted to tell him that the white people are better: since the roots of humanity are in Africa that means we all have black ancestors, a black grandfather and a black grandmother

  • he doesn't trust the media (newspapers, tv, radio)

  • we live in a fragmented world while we have a black rain of information dropping down on us

  • the Internet is a great way for people in Africa (someone in a small village with little electricity and barely a phone line) to suddenly find themselves in the middle of the global community, however there's a lot of shit on the Net too

  • the women in Africa have the burden of caring for their families on their shoulders, but get far too little political influence: he said he'd once seen a woman carrying a 50kg bag of cement on her head and two men helped her putting it on her head

  • in the next 20 years the economy of China will reach a point where it will surpass the economy of the US - the last time that happened was over 120 years ago when the economy of the US surpassed that of Britain: we all will add Chinese words/phrases to our native languages

  • if you wanna do your child some good, get the kid a Chinese nanny

  • he hopes that Nelson Mandela will live long enough to actually see the World series football games happen

  • there is a lot of hypocrisy in all the talk about boycotting the games in Peking: the only way you can change things is by dialogue, that's how China changed some things in Darfur, where they had investments

  • he wonders how China will deal with Africa - if they develop some colonization behaviour

Seriously, Henning Mankell is fun to listen to. If you ever get the chance to go to a reading of his, do it. Oh, and I now want the new book. *g*
